4) How do you Spread Bet on the Aquarius Platinum Market to Go Up?
Aquarius Platinum Trading Example
If you are going to spread bet on UK shares such as Aquarius Platinum then, looking at a spread trading company website such as Paddypowertrader, at the time of writing you would see a spread trading price of 400.0p - 401.4p.
As a result, you can bet on Aquarius Platinum shares to increase higher than 401.4p or to decrease lower than 400.0p.
When spread betting, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down; specifically, for the Aquarius Platinum market a unit is 1p of the share's price movement.
As an example, you could choose to trade £10 for every penny that the Aquarius Platinum share price increases or decreases.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you bought Aquarius Platinum at 401.4p and the shares rose then the spread might become 409.4p - 410.8p. In that case, you might decide to take your profits by closing your spread trade at 409.4p.
Your P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (409.4p - 401.4p) x £10 per penny stake
Your P&L = 8.0p x £10 per penny
Your P&L = £80.00 profit
Of course, if the market had moved down to, as an example, 391.4p - 392.8p, you might want to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If that happened, you would sell the market at 391.4p.
You would close your bet with the same £10 per penny stake:
Your P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (391.4p - 401.4p) x £10 per penny stake
Your P&L = -10.0p x £10 per penny
Your P&L = -£100.00 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Aquarius Platinum Market to Go Down?
One of the many advantages of using a spread bet is that investors can sell the markets.
When we started this example, the price was 400.0p - 401.4p.
If you were to sell Aquarius Platinum at 400.0p and the shares went down then the market might be re-priced at 391.0p - 392.4p. Therefore, you might decide to close your spread bet at 392.4p.
Your P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (400.0p - 392.4p) x £10 per penny stake
Your P&L = 7.6p x £10 per penny
Your P&L = £76.00 profit
On the other hand, if the market had increased to, as an example, 408.1p - 409.5p, you might want to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If this were the case, you would buy back at 409.5p.
So, with the same £10 per penny stake:
Your P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (400.0p - 409.5p) x £10 per penny stake
Your P&L = -9.5p x £10 per penny
Your P&L = -£95.00 loss
