3) How to Spread Bet on Norwegian Shares
Fred Olsen Energy Spread Trading Example
Should you decide to spread trade on Norwegian shares such as Fred Olsen Energy then, on visiting a Spread Trading Company's website, at the time of writing you would see a spread of 259.3 NOK - 260.3 NOK.
Therefore, you can bet on Fred Olsen Energy shares to increase above 260.3 NOK or decrease below 259.3 NOK.
When making a spread bet, you trade on every unit the market rises or falls. With the Fred Olsen Energy market a unit is 1 Norwegian Krone of the share's price movement.
With this example, you could decide to trade £8 for every Krone that the Fred Olsen Energy share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Norwegian Shares to Increase
If you were to go long of Fred Olsen Energy at 260.3 NOK and the shares rose then the spread could change to 273.3 NOK - 274.3 NOK. Therefore, you might decide to close your trade for a profit by selling at 273.3 NOK.
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - initial level of the market) x stake per Krone
Profit/Loss = (273.3 NOK - 260.3 NOK) x £8 per Krone stake
Profit/Loss = 13.0 NOK x £8 per Krone
Profit/Loss = £104.00 profit
On the other hand, if the market decreased to, for example, 246.0 NOK - 247.0 NOK, you may want to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you would sell back at 246.0 NOK.
So, with the same £8 per Krone stake:
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - initial level of the market) x stake per Krone
Profit/Loss = (246.0 NOK - 260.3 NOK) x £8 per Krone stake
Profit/Loss = -14.3 NOK x £8 per Krone
Profit/Loss = -£114.40 loss
Spread Betting on the Norwegian Shares to Decrease
One benefit of placing a spread bet is that investors can short the markets.
To start with, the spread was 259.3 NOK - 260.3 NOK.
If you were to sell Fred Olsen Energy at 259.3 NOK and the shares fell then the spread could move to 243.4 NOK - 244.4 NOK. If this were the case, you might choose to close your trade for a profit at 244.4 NOK.
Profit/Loss = (initial level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per Krone
Profit/Loss = (259.3 NOK - 244.4 NOK) x £8 per Krone stake
Profit/Loss = 14.9 NOK x £8 per Krone
Profit/Loss = £119.20 profit
Nevertheless, if the market had moved up to, for example, 274.7 NOK - 275.7 NOK, you could choose to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If so, you would buy back at 275.7 NOK.
Therefore, with the same £8 per Krone stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per Krone
Profit/Loss = (259.3 NOK - 275.7 NOK) x £8 per Krone stake
Profit/Loss = -16.4 NOK x £8 per Krone
Profit/Loss = -£131.20 loss
