4) How do you Spread Bet on the TGS-NOPEC Market to Go Up?

TGS-NOPEC Spread Betting Example

If you are going to spread trade on Norwegian shares such as TGS-NOPEC then, on visiting a spread betting website such as Capital Spreads, you might find a spread trading price of 114.6 NOK - 115.3 NOK.

That means you can spread trade on TGS-NOPEC shares to go higher than 115.3 NOK or to go lower than 114.6 NOK.

When spread betting, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down. In the case of the TGS-NOPEC market a unit is 1 Norwegian Krone of the share's price movement.

As an example, you could decide to bet £15 for every Krone that the TGS-NOPEC share price goes up or down.

Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Rise

If you bought TGS-NOPEC at 115.3 NOK and the shares increased then the spread could change to 121.1 NOK - 121.8 NOK. If this were the case, you could close your trade at 121.1 NOK.

Your Profits (or Losses) = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = (121.1 NOK - 115.3 NOK) x £15 per Krone stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 5.8 NOK x £15 per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = £87.00 profit

The markets can of course fall, if the market were to drop down to, as an example, 110.1 NOK - 110.8 NOK, you could choose to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that happened, you would sell the market at 110.1 NOK.

You would do this with the same £15 per Krone stake:

Your Profits (or Losses) = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = (110.1 NOK - 115.3 NOK) x £15 per Krone stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -5.2 NOK x £15 per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£78.00 loss

5) How do you Spread Bet on the TGS-NOPEC Market to Go Down?

A major benefit of placing a spread bet is that you can short the markets.

When we started this example, the spread was 114.6 NOK - 115.3 NOK.

If you were to sell TGS-NOPEC at 114.6 NOK and the shares fell then the spread could move to 107.9 NOK - 108.6 NOK. If that were to happen, you could close your trade for a profit by buying at 108.6 NOK.

Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = (114.6 NOK - 108.6 NOK) x £15 per Krone stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 6.0 NOK x £15 per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = £90.00 profit

Financial markets also move up, if the market had increased to, for example, 119.3 NOK - 120.0 NOK, you might want to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If so, you would buy your spread bet at 120.0 NOK.

Therefore, with the same £15 per Krone stake:

Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = (114.6 NOK - 120.0 NOK) x £15 per Krone stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -5.4 NOK x £15 per Krone
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£81.00 loss
