United Drug Financial Spread Trading Example
Should you decide to spread bet on Irish shares such as United Drug then, on visiting a spread trading site like Financial Spreads, at the time of writing you would see a spread betting price of €2.27 - €2.31.
Therefore, you can spread trade on United Drug shares to move above €2.31 or below €2.27.
With spread trading, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down. For the United Drug market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
So, you might decide to trade £8 for every cent that the United Drug share price rises or falls.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to go long of United Drug at €2.31 and the shares increased then you might see the spread move to €2.41 - €2.45. If that happened, you could close your spread bet at €2.41.
P&L = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€2.41 - €2.31) x £8 per cent stake
P&L = €0.10 x £8 per cent
P&L = £80 profit
Financial markets also move down, if the market dropped to, for example, €2.22 - €2.26, you might want to close your spread bet to limit your losses. In that case, you would sell back at €2.22.
Therefore, with the same £8 per cent stake:
P&L = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€2.22 - €2.31) x £8 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.09 x £8 per cent
P&L = -£72 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the United Drug Market to Go Down?
One useful benefit of using a spread bet is that investors can go short of the markets.
When we began this example, the spread was €2.27 - €2.31.
If you were to go short of United Drug at €2.27 and the shares fell then the spread could change to €2.11 - €2.15. Therefore, you might decide to close your bet for a profit at €2.15.
P&L = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€2.27 - €2.15) x £8 per cent stake
P&L = €0.12 x £8 per cent
P&L = £96 profit
On the other hand, if the market had moved up to, as an example, €2.34 - €2.38, you might want to close your trade to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy at €2.38.
You would do this with the same £8 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€2.27 - €2.38) x £8 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.11 x £8 per cent
P&L = -£88 loss
